I live in Tokyo and dollar stores here are an essential way of life. You can buy groceries (to a certain extent) household goods, sanitary items and a lot of other everyday items that don't need a high priced brand name for them to be effective in your everyday life. The interesting thing here is that people from all income brackets shop at these stores. No one gives image a second thought, only the amount of money saved by not shopping for the same items at supermarkets with their high prices.
